Russian hackers that had reportedly stolen 1.2 billion combinations of I.Ds and passwords earlier this month have recently also attacked JP Morgan Chase & Co. along with at least four other banks. In the attempt, the bank had lost much information including gigabytes of customer data, which was reported by two people familiar with the case’s investigation.
One of the banks claims that state-sponsored Russian hackers caused the breach. The FBI is already investigating if the attack was retaliation for the US sanctions on Russia. Through this attack, the gang has allegedly stolen credentials, which can be used to transfer funds. Moreover, they took other sensitive information from the employees’ computers which can create other security and privacy issues.
Investigators have detected that the attackers were routing scripts through computers located in several Latin American states. They also added that a software known as zero-day was used on at least one bank’s website. Zero-day is a flaw only known to hackers, which allows them to remote access a computer. One bank’s representative said that companies of their size and magnitude experience cyber attacks every other day. However, the attack caused the JP Morgan stock to fall 16 cents in the New York trading.
The investigation is still going on, and the FBI is trying to trace the source of the cyber attack. Another incident that had occurred a few days ago involved several images of a Russian car crash appearing upon search of any keywords on Google Images. Although nothing was reported by Google people strongly believe that the search engine was hacked by the same gang. In case it was, America and all countries for that matter are in trouble. If this gang can infiltrate Google, it can surely penetrate other cyber fortresses too.
